Way back in 2020, I attended the Comics Experience Introduction to Writing Course with long-time comic veteran Andy Schmidt.

I had met Andy previously and participated in every free workshop that Comics Experience offered, as well as taking their Intro to Lettering Course, purchasing one-on-one editing services from them, and even participating as a member of their online community.

Andy was a huge help and mentor, and his Intro to Writing class was everything as advertised. I cannot recommend any of the Comics Experience services to veteran and rookie writers and creators alike in the comic industry.

They have so many resources, courses, and just stuff to help grow and learn, it’s amazing.

However, it was here that THE MAFIA VS. THE KLAN really took shape.

I wanted to professionally work through this idea I had for the Mafia fighting the KKK, inspired by events from my own grandfather’s past and a Military Channel episode with the same title.

It was during this course that I shaped the idea in a five-page format, which, if I could condense my idea in five pages, I thought I had way more than enough material to build it out into an OGN of over 100 pages.

At this point, it was just about crafting and massaging the idea. Working key points. Fleshing out the ideas. Getting critiques.

It was a professionally led brainstorming session, essentially with a veteran comic editor who has worked with some of the best.

A can’t miss opportunity, right? Now, the story has drastically changed and expanded from this original 5-pager.

Like, vastly different, with a few pieces of bone that made their way over to the new skeleton. I won’t say what, how, or who was kept in the new structure. Only here is where my mind was at, and some early development that ultimately helped build the current project and final script draft.

So, enjoy the first edition of MAFIA VS. KKK was completed in its early stages as a 5-page one-and-done short.

The story opens during the height of prohibition, early morning in a South Jersey town, as MARIO FORTUNA arrives at his restaurant to find it destroyed and his son, RONNIE, as well as his restaurant cooks, left dead outside.
